EMV is the brandname of EMV Co. which is the organisation jointly established by VISA International and MasterCard International. EMV stands for Europay MasterCard VISA. This organisation has set the standards for payment cards with chip. Due to the increasing fraud and misuse with the payments done by magnetic stripe cards, the smart EMV cards have been developed according to the EMV standard in order to prevent fraud and misuse, which they do so.

Among the EMV cards a distinction is drawn between SDA cards and DDA cards.
The SDA cards are the standard cards. SDA stands for Static Data Authentication
The DDA cards are more sophisticated than the SDA cards. DDA stands for Dynamic Data Authentication.
